5 Tips to Maintain Good Habits

10/29/2016

It's just an hour to go!!!  In less than 90 minutes I'll be sitting in the dentist's chair with my gob wide open, sweaty palms, my heart beating so fast I'm sure he (the dentist) and the lovely nurse, can hear it. OMG!!!!

I've had the appointment in my diary for a while now and every time I check my schedule I quickly glance over the dental appointment as if it might just disappear.  Well wouldn't that be lovely?  Yes it would be lovely BUT on the other hand no it wouldn't be lovely to end up with gum disease, or rotten black teeth or having to endure the excruciating pain of toothache or even worse the thought of putting my false teeth in a cup beside the bed. Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!

It's amazing how purposeful my organizing and tidying around the house has been this morning not to mention all the office work I've managed to fit into a couple of hours.  I'm even taking time to write this blog!!!!  Why??  Because I want to share with you a valuable analogy between my dental visit and daily success habits.

I'm also thinking of a poem Palm Ayres wrote called Oh I wish I'd looked after me teeth.  I remember I used to laugh at this poem especially the bit about the false teeth.  Here's the first verse

Whats the Verdict

I'm back home; alive and well.  All my teeth are exactly where they were when I left earlier thank God.  HE said "you've been busy Jo; the teeth are perfect"!!  What he really meant was there are no need for fillings and you've been cleaning them properly as instructed by me a couple of years ago.  "It works you know," he said, "if you follow a daily routine of brushing and flossing and get them descaled twice yearly."

Well that got me thinking about daily success habits in our lives.  If you want to be successful in any area of your life it requires commitment and resolve.  For example if you want to create a successful business, or a healthier body, or become skilled at a sport it requires practice on a daily basis.  In this case I want to have healthy teeth and avoid the pain both physically and financially of all things associated with teeth problems

Setting Clear Goals!

Initially there is a period of adjustment required and a clear goal identified and a series of steps put in place to get you closer to your goal.  When I visited the dentist a few years ago he identified the beginning of gum disease.  He gave me a series of steps I needed to implement immediately to deal with the problem and improve the longevity of healthy teeth.  I got to work straight away and went out and purchased the tools required (suitable brush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss) and implemented a daily routine which has now become a habit.  What is a Habit?  A habit is a behaviour pattern acquired by frequent repitition and becomes an automatic response.

What area of your life would you like to change? What's holding you back?  Are there new habits you would like to form or old habits you want to change but you don't know where to start?  Here's 5 steps to help you get started.

5 Steps to Creating Daily Success Habits

  • Identify your goal/ decide what you want
  • Write down your goal and put it somewhere visible and read it every day.  This helps to remind you and keep you on track.
  • Consciously connect with the reason you want to achieve your goal and use this as a constant reminder to stay on track
  • Set yourself up for success; put in place daily activities/actions to get you closer to your goal.  Remember; nothing happens without Action
  • Check in with your plan every day, week, and month and  by the end of your first month you will have created a Daily Success Habit just like brushing your teeth every morning without being prompted.

If you would like to work with me I would love to help you to identify your goals and support you in achieving the results you deserve.  To discuss a programme that is tailored to your personal needs and circumstances please call me on 087 2240135.  Let's make 2017 your best year!!
